He obtained a degree in engineering (1910) and mathematics (1912), but began his scientific work as an astronomer at the observatories of Paris and Meudon. In 1915 he obtained the post of professor of rational mechanics at the Polytechnic of Turin, then went in 1920 to Pisa (astronomy and celestial mechanics) and thereafter to Rome where he was appointed professor of astronomy and the director of the Observatory of Monte Mario. Armellini wrote many academic and popular works and was a member of the Accademia dei Lincei and collaborator of the Italian Treccani.
