Series: Encyklopædie der Naturwissenschaften, III.2. 8vo. xi, 611 pp. Illustrations, tables, charts. Glossy green paper boards, gilt-stamped spine title. Ex-library copy; rubber-stamp. Very good+. Articles of special interest for reference include: "Sonne" by N. Herz; "Sternbilder" by Valentiner, which includes lists of double stars, nebula, star clusters, and variable stars with some cartographic history for each constellation; "Sterncataloge und -Karten" by F. Ristenpart, for which the treatment of star charts is quite disappointing, but the list of modern star catalogs is excellent. Valentiner was director of the Karlsruho Observatory and a professor of astronomy at the University of Heidelburg. "In 1874, Wilhelm Valentiner led a successful German expedition to Tschifu (China) to observe a solar eclipse. . . . After the establishment of the "Grand Duchy Mountain Observatory" (today's Heidelberg-Konigstuhl State Observatory) in the year 1898 Valentiner was placed over the Department of Astrometry, which stood in competition with the Astrophysics Department under Max Wolf."
