This study on the physiology and pathology of the cerebellum established Luciani's reputation. Dedicated to his teacher at the Physiological Institute of the University of Leipzig (1872-73) Carl Ludwig, to whom Luciani expressed "deep and lasting impressions." This monograph describes his "observations on decerebellated dogs and apes. While Ferrier had thought it impossible to keep mammals alive after destruction of the cerebellum, he now conceded his error and asserted that Luciani 'was the first to examine the consequences of partial or total extirpation of the cerebellum in higher mammals by skillfully planned and executed experiments.' Thanks to his extraordinary skill, Luciani was able to keep decerebellated dogs and monkeys alive for as long as one year. This work initiated the modern study of cerebellar function; it led him to the classic theory that the cerebellum serves as a center for tonic, sthenic and static functions, a theory now accepted as fact." - Haymaker & Schiller. Thus, Luciani performed the definitive experimental work on cerebellar function. His analysis of the postoperative states he produced helped to begin the modern period of cerebellar physiology. The first Italian edition appeared in 1891. Luciani was Professor of physiology at Siena, Florence, and Rome. He was a student at Leipzig of Carl Ludwig at the Physiological Institute.
