Born in Britain, Sawkins' family moved to Baltimore, New Orleans, Mexico in 1830-5, then 10 years in Cuba, Peru, before he lived in Hawaii in 1850-1852 and made a journal with these fine drawings, here reproduced for the first time. Sawkins is also known for his miniature portraits.
