VOL. I ONLY. Folio. [xii], 600 pp. Engraved title-page vignette of a winged horse, woodcut initials. Contemporary quarter red calf over marbled paper-backed boards; worn, spine ends torn. Very good. RARE. Second edition of the first volume of Clericus' commentary on the New Testament, constituting a translation into Latin and supplement of Hammond's own notes. "Le Clerc's commentary had a great influence in breaking up traditional prejudices and showing the necessity for a more scientific inquiry into the origin and meaning of the biblical books. It was on all sides hotly attacked" (E.B., p. 355). Some biblical scholars and commentators "mix up the philosophic theories of their time in their paraphrases of the Bible; others introduce their peculiar systems, their favorite notions, or their pious reflections. On this account such expositions are being adapted to those Christians who are not theologians. It is not, however, intended to detract from the merit of labours of this sort which are furnished with philological, historical, and other observations: such are the works of Erasmus, with the notes of Clericus; of Hammond, with the notes of the same learned diving; of Michaelis, Semler, &c." (Seiler & Heringa, p. 399).
