Ploss devoted the majority of his career to professional societies, being instrumental in the establishment of several, notably the Obstetrics Society of Leipzig. He served as an officer of several throughout his life. Ploss did his studies in Leipzig, graduating in 1846. He served in the army and in government as medical advisor.
