De Boer had a huge impact on theoretical physics in Amsterdam, and quite apart from his papers (which are still highly regarded), he created the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam which was to drive forward theoretical physics and spawn numerous experts in the field. He often worked in the van der Waals Laboratory, Amsterdam and wrote several important papers with A.
