Calvin Cutter studied medicine at Dartmouth University, graduating in 1832. After practicing medicine in small towns in New Hampshire, Cutter embarked upon a career as a medical lecturer throughout the United States. His first publication for the lay public was First book on anatomy and physiology (Boston, 1847). This was an elementary work intended for individuals with little medical knowledge. It contained many practical suggestions for maintaining good hygiene, a glossary of scientific terms, and a section of poisons and their antidotes. It was very popular; 500,000 copies were sold by 1871. This is an expanded edition, prepared as a textbook for schools, colleges, and families. Cordasco 70-0804; Heirs of Hippocrates 1695 & 1696 (Boston, 1847; Boston, 1849).
