Previous owner's inked signature and rubber stamp. Near fine. Sir Edward Sharpey-Schafer was Jodrell Professor of Physiology in University College, London. Schafer edited a classic textbook of physiology (see GM 649), demonstrated the presence of adrenaline in the adrenal medulla (GM 1143), analyzed, with Victor Horsley, the motor responses of the cerebral cortex, internal capsule, and spinal cord of higher primates (GM 1419), and made important contributions in the field of artificial respiration (GM 2028.59). Edward Schafer was a pupil of William Sharpey (1802-1880), and when the great man died without any known descendants Schafer gave the name to his son, in order to perpetuate it. When his son was killed in the war of 1914-1918, Schafer added it to his own.
