In it, he explores "the question whether art in its early development was at all aided by anatomy, and the further inquiry whether the aid of anatomy is of any real benefit to art" (p. 2). The Philosophical Society of Washington is the oldest scientific society in Washington, DC. It was founded in 1871 in the home of Joseph Henry, "an early researcher in magnetism and the discoverer of electromagnetic self-induction" ("About the PSW").
