New York:: Hafner. 1960. hardcover. Three volumes. Large 8vo. xxxvii, xxxii, [ii], 868; vi, 770; [vi],. 604, [152] pp. Index. Two-tone blind and gilt-stamped clot; rubbed.. Very good.. Re-issue with added material: this edition adds the translation of five lengthy dedicatory letters of Morgagni’s. The editor’s preface includes some information on the translator Alexander (1736-1765) and a bit of background to the work. Morgagni was the first to systematically correlate clinical details with accurate post mortem findings. Though the book has never been issued with illustrations Morgagni had the ability to describe his findings with a “fascinating literary style” [Long], which makes his book “one of the most readable of all medical books” [Lilly]. Morgagni gave the first pathological descriptions of several diseases. His monumental collection of over 700 disease cases included an authentic case of angina pectoris, and gave classic descriptions of mitral stenosis and heart-blockage. He gave reports of epilepsy and psychiatric disorders, and the first clear elaboration of findings in apoplexy since Wepfer a century before.
