Powell, Boswell's Life of Johnson, II, p. 43. ¶ A large proportion of the letters are from Dr. Johnson to Mrs. Thrale, and cover a period from August 1765 (six months after their first meeting) to July 1784, when he expresses his grief at her marriage to Mr. Piozzi, and his gratitude for 'that kindness which soothed twenty years of a life radically wretched.' The poems are Verses addressed to Dr.Lawrence and Translations from Boethius, in some of which he was assisted by Mrs. Thale. ¶ Frederick Whiley Hilles was a graduate of Yale University. Hilles wrote, New light on Dr. Johnson: Essays on the occasion of his 250th birthday, Yale, 1959. He also edited the collected letters of Joshua Reynolds [Yale, 2000]. . 3
