The Benedictine Benito Jerónimo Feyjoo (1676-764) exerted a significant influence on his contemporaries. Disillusioned by the isolation of Spain and reigning ignorance, he put his ideas on paper and thus created the "Critical Theatre, collection of speeches on philosophical and social status." Many were opposed to his critical spirit and tried to discredit his work, despite the reactionary attacks, he made his influence. In 1739 Feyjoo suspended publication of the theatre and began the erudite letters of similar character but something more practical, which ended in 1760; the present volume is from the new series.
