1 GIBNEY, Virgil Pendleton (1847-1927). The hip and its diseases.
New York & London: Bermingham, 1884. 1884
192 x 132 mm. 8vo. 412 pp. 64 figs., indexes. Text-block the same size as the maroon cloth copy of this title, but narrower margins. Top and rear covers blind-stamped, dark green cloth, gilt spine with thin horizontal bands at the top and bottom of the spine and a gilt floral design in the middle of the spine under the author’s name; spine ends lightly chipped. Very good. FIRST EDITION. This is Gibney’s most significant work. "The volume has eighteen chapters and is quite comprehensive in scope. The largest number of cases concerned bone and joint tuberculosis, and Gibney wrote that in the early days of the Hospital, over one-half of the inpatients suffered from some form of this infectious process. The book contains sixty-four illustrations. There was only one edition." - Rutkow. Virgil P. Gibney was associated with James Knight (1810-1887) at the Hospital for the Ruptured and Crippled in New York. After living in the hospital for thirteen years, the two men developed clinical disagreements; Knight asked Gibney for his resignation after this book was published. "Gibney went into private practice but after Knight’s death Gibney was asked to return to the hospital as surgeon-in-chief." Rutkow. Cordasco 80-2298; Orr collection 1079; Rutkow, History of surgery in the United States, OR41; Shands, Early orthopaedic surgeons of America, pp. 85-96. First Edition.
