PROVENANCE: LeRoy Crummer (1872-1934) obtained his M.D. from North Western University Medical School, Chicago, in 1896. He visited European clinics on several occasions, and later made frequent trips to Europe on book-hunting expeditions. Accompanied by his wife, Crummer made periodic tours of the main book centers of Europe, amassing a remarkable library of which two catalogues were prepared. Crummer made some very interesting discoveries during his book collecting tours, including an unpublished manuscript of William Heberden (1710-1801). His books were donated to the University of Michigan, the University of Nebraska and to numerous other libraries in the United States and in England. Thornton, Medical books, libraries and collectors, 2nd ed., p. 291. Chauncey Depew Leake (1896-1978) was professor of pharmacology at the University of California whose translation of William Harvey’s (1578-1657) De motu cordis is a highly respected work. His name is associated with three Garrison and Morton entries: 2068.14, 5713, 6471.1. John Bertrand de Cusance Morant Saunders (b. 1903) worked closely with Charles D. O’Malley to produce translations of the works of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) (see: Garrison and Morton 366) and Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564) (see: Garrison and Morton 372 & 375).
