A classic work on the teaching and learning of medicine, in which Billroth supported “the retention of a classical preparation for medicine ... including Latin and Greek,” calling them “indispensable” [Bonner]. William Henry Welch translated this book in 1924. Billroth, a German-Austrian surgeon, was born April 26, 1829, Bergen, on the island of Rügen, Prussia; he died February 6, 1894, Abbazia on the Istria peninsula, Italy (now Opatija, Croatia). Billroth was a lifelong friend of the composer Brahms, and a pioneer of visceral surgery. Billroth is known as the founder of modern abdominal surgery.
