Huggins (1901-1997) was an American cancer researcher who was co-awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1966 for discovering, with colleague Peyton Rouse, that hormones could be used to stop the spread of certain cancers. Goodwin was a prominent Los Angeles urologist. The first letter invites Dr. Goodwin to fill a vacancy in the faculty of the University of Chicago, while the second expresses condolences for bad news of an unclear nature—perhaps Goodwin’s polite rejection of the offer. . 1
