19 FRACASTORIUS, Hieronymus (1478?-1553). Della sifilide ovvero del morbo gallico di Girolamo Fracastoro Libri III. volgarizzati da Vincenzo Benini Colognese.
Bologna: Lelio dall Volpe, 1765. 1765
8vo. xx, 171, [1] pp. Engraved frontis. & title-page printer’s ornament, uncut; faint red pencil notations on title-page. Full modern red morocco. PARALLEL LATIN AND ITALIAN TEXT. ?The most famous of all medical poems. It epitomized contemporary knowledge of syphilis, gave to it its present name, and recognized a venereal cause. Fracastorius refers to mercury as a remedy.? [Garrison & Morton]. ?When the French disease or great pox swept through Europe in the early sixteenth century, Fracastoro, physician to Cardinal Pietro Bembo, composed a mock-heroic poem on the disease, for his patron. The poem tells the tale of the shepherd Syphilus (a name possibly derived from the local dialect term sifilide), who contracts the disease after insulting the god Apollo; Apollo forgives the insult, however, and provides humanity with a remedy in the guiacum tree. The poem contains an excellent description of the various manifestations of the sickness (which Fracastoro recognized as having a venereal cause), as well as an account of the mercury treatment and speculation upon the origin of the disease. The poem was enormously popular, going through over 100 editions; through it, the name syphilis became universally adopted for the affliction.? [Norman]. Baumgartner-Fulton 50; Blake/NLM p. 154; Waller 3192; Wellcome III, p. 51. cf. Garrison & Morton 2364; Heirs of Hippocrates 172; Norman 826.
