14 BRIGGS, William (1642-1704) Ophthalmo-graphia, sive oculi ejusque partium descriptio anatomica, nec non, ejusdem nova visionis theoria
Lugd. Batavor., Apud Petrum vander Aa 1686 391167639xx39 hardcover 2
Lugd. Batavor.,: Apud Petrum vander Aa. 1686. hardcover. 2. 131 x 79 mm. 12mo. 312, [12, including 8 pages of publisher's advertisements] pp. Added engraved title-page, headpieces, floriated initials, separate title-page for Nova visionis theoria, index, 3 folding engraved plates; lightly foxed. Contemporary mottled stiff vellum, raised bands, brown leather spine label; hinges cracked, rubbed. Bookplate of Pierre Amalric. Very good. . FIRST LEYDEN EDITION of the first British treatise on the anatomy of the eye. Includes the Ophthalmo-graphia and both parts of Nova visionis theoria (with a separate title page). Briggs' Ophthalmo-graphia was the first British treatise on the anatomy of the eye (1st ed., Cambridge, 1676). In this work Briggs described the papilla of the optic disc and hypothesized that vibrations caused by rays of light striking fibers of the retina were conveyed to the papilla and thence to the optic thalami, on the model of a spider's web. The Nova visionis theoria concerns the physiology of vision. Among the noteworthy descriptions offered here is the projection of the optic nerve beyond the level of the retina. Briggs recognized that the retina was an expansion in which the fibers of the optic nerve are spread out. In the illustrations to this volume, Briggs drew the chiasm without union. He supported the hypothesis of vibrations as an explanation of the phenomena of nervous action. In a letter appended to the Nova visionis theoria, Sir Isaac Newton acknowledges the benefit he derived from Briggs' anatomical skill and knowledge. William Briggs studied at both Cambridge and Oxford, later taking his medical degree at Cambridge. He studied "At Montpellier under Vieussens [and] was one of the few seventeenth-century physicians who specialized in the treatment of the eye." Becker Collection. He was a fellow and Censor of the College of Physicians and physician in ordinary to William III. DNB, I, p. 128; Monk's Roll, I, p. 424-425.
