A beautiful book - SIGNED by artist. Very good. Complete copies of this portfolio are scarce. Very good. WITH THE ORIGINAL DRYPOINT ETCHING SIGNED BY CHAMBERLAIN. "Chamberlain was born in Iowa in 1895 and raised in the state of Washington. In 1915 he enrolled in the architectural program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, but his education was interrupted by World War I. Like many other young Americans, including future literary stars Ernest Hemingway and e. e. Cummings, he sailed for France to join the volunteer ambulance corps, the American Field Service. By his own admission Chamberlain fell in love with the country even before he stepped foot on shore. At the conclusion of the war Sam returned to Washington where he worked for a time as a renderer for various architectural firms and a commercial artist. But the lure of France was too strong, and in 1922 he headed back to Paris. … During his lifetime Sam Chamberlain was widely respected for his work as a printmaker, artist, photographer, and writer. He was a member of the esteemed National Academy of Design, the American Institute of Architects, and other prestigious societies in America and Europe. He received many awards and left behind more than eighty books. Also included in is legacy is the Marblehead Arts Association of which he was a founding member." – Escapes North (obituary for the artist).

Kansas City, MO:: Frank Glenn. 1946. hardcover. 8vo. xviii, 274 pp. 9 plates, bibliography, index. Gilt-stamped navy. blue cloth; extremities rubbed, spine faded. SIGNED by author in ink.. Very good.. FIRST EDITION. La belle ferronnire is a name given to a portrait of a woman in the Muse du Louvre, usually attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The Louvre currently ascribes it to the school of Leonardo da Vinci in Milan.A later version of the painting, on canvas, had been offered to the Kansas City Art Institute as the original, but was identified as a copy, on the basis of a photograph, by Sir Joseph Duveen, who permitted his remarks to be published in the New York World in 1920; the owner, Mrs Andre Lardoux Hahn, sued for defamation of property in a notorious court case, which involved many of the major connoisseurs of the day, inspecting the two paintings side by side at the Louvre; the case was eventually heard in New York before a jury selected for not knowing anything of Leonardo or Morellian connoisseurship, and settled for $60,000 plus court expenses, which were considerable. The owner's account, Harry Hahns The Rape of La Belle (1946) is a classic of populist conspiracy theory applied to the art world. Interestingly, after decades in an Omaha vault, the Hahn La Belle was sold at auction by Sothebys on January 28, 2010 as by a follower of Leonardo, probably before 1750; it brought 1.5 million dollars, a price three times higher than Sotheby's pre-sale estimate. The buyer was an unidentified American collector (Wikipedia). . 2 First Edition.
