Freeden was a noted German mathematician and expert on navigation, and in 1867 was founder of the North German Naval Observatory. The scientific results of the first German maritime navigation, with remarks on the weather, sailing instructions ocean currents, isotherms, isametralen and isogons of the North Sea. It was the task of the Maritime Security to provide precise proposals for the best route planning, taking into account the latest scientific findings and collected observations, thereby reducing traveling time and costs.
