11 KÖLLIKER, Albert von (1817-1905) Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen und der Höheren Thiere. Akademische Vorträge…
Leipzig: Wilhelm Engelmann 1861 147x186114815 hardcover 11
Leipzig:: Wilhelm Engelmann. 1861. hardcover. 11. 8vo. x, 468 pp. 225 woodcut illustrations, index. Modern dark green old- style cloth, black morocco spine label, new endleaves. Some old stamps, otherwise fine. . FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST BOOK ON COMPARATIVE EMBRYOLOGY. An important treatise on vertebrate embryology from one of the most prominent biologists and histologists of his time. “Kölliker produced another splendid text book in his Entwicklungsgeschichte des Menschen und der Höheren Thiere (1861), a summary in clear and comprehensive form of the embryological knowledge of the time.”—Nordenskiöld. Kölliker’s importance lies in the area of normal tissue study. He was one of the first to question the prevailing germ-layer doctrine, thus playing a pivotal role in the establishment of the new cell-theory. His other accomplishments in histology include tracing the origin of tissues from the segmenting ovum through the developing embryo, demonstrating the continuity between nerve-fibers and nerve-cells of vertebrates. Much of his work on developing cells and the layers from which they arise has been questioned, but many of his statements about muscle development are still valid. (See Oppenheimer, 271ff). In addition to his work in cell tissues, he also studied the eye, and is known for his description of the iris, and the ear expanding on Corti’s work. Kölliker studied with the most prominent educators and scientists of his time: Arnold, Joh. Müller, and Henle. A native of Zürich, he received a Ph.D from Heidelberg in 1841, and a year later his medical degree. He was prosector for Henle in Zürich the next three years, becoming a professor of physiology and comparative anatomy in 1845. In 1847 he continued his academic career in Würzburg, teaching anatomy, microscopy, and developmental history until his retirement in 1897. He was knighted in 1896. cf. Zuppinger, Hans. Albert Kölliker und die mikroskopische Anatomie (Zürich, 1974). Cushing K 167; Garrison and Morton 487; Heirs of Hippocrates 990; Hirsch 1880, III: 571-2; Nordenskiöld p. 400; Oppenheimer, pp. 271-3; Schuman, 2: 221; Skinner 203; Waller 5355. Not in Cole or Osler. See also: Kölliker, R.A. Errinerungen aus meinem Leben. (Leipzig, 1899); Festschrift z.d. 50jähr. Doktorjubiläum (Leipzig, 1892); Bibliography: von Taschenberg; Leopold-ina 22 (1906), p. 103-116. Dust jacket present. First Edition.
