3 BONNET, Charles (1720-1793). Essai de psychologie; ou considerations sur les operations de l'ame, sur l'habitude et sur l'education. Auxquelles on a ajouté des principes philosophiques sur la cause premiere et sur son effet.
London, 1755. 1755
Two parts in one volume. 12mo. xlii, 390 pp. Woodcut headpieces, decorative initials and tailpieces. Gilt-stamped dark green morocco, ornately gilt spine, red leather spine label, all edges red, marbled end-leaves; rubbed. Small rubber stamp on margin of title. Very good. FIRST EDITION of this work on psychology in which Charles Bonnet follows the lead of John Locke (1632-1704) and Étienne Bonnot de Condillac (1715-1780), relying on Condillac's senseless statue to develop his system. "Condillac avoided physiology. The biologically minded Bonnet introduced it. His statue had nerves and you hear a great deal about the nervous fluid and the agitation of the nervous fluid and the agitation of the nervous fibres, discussion which resembled Hartley's speculation about vibration and diminutive vibrations. It has even been said that Bonnet is one of those who anticipated the doctrine of specific nerve energies because he wrote 'Every sense is probably limited to different specific fibres.'" Boring. Blake, NLM, 58; Boring, The history of experimental psychology, p. 211; DSB, II, pp. 286-287; Gascoigne 10837.1. First Edition.

5 CALMEIL, Louis Florentin (1798-1895). De la Paralysie consideree chez les alienes, recherches faites dans le service de feu M. Royer-Collard et de M. Esquirol.
Paris & London: J.-B. Baillière, 1826. 1826
8vo. (198 x 126 mm) [4], ii, 446 pp. Errata on 286v. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards, gilt-ruled spine, gilt-stamped black morocco spine label; extremities rubbed, corners bumped, hinges worn at foot of spine. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Classic description of general paralysis. Calmeil?s work complements Bayle’s earlier delineation of general paralysis. Between the two of them they established the clinical picture of general paralysis of the insane, associating it with chronic inflammation of the brain. This was the first breakthrough in neuro-psychiatric research, and it gave psychiatry the spur to precise and systematic clinical, pathological, and statistical innovation on its own terms. ? [Garrison & Morton]. ?Calmeil was a pupil of Esquirol. His treatise contains the classic description of general paralysis of the insane, along with an attempt to correlate the pathology of the disease with its clinical manifestations. However, Calmeil did not recognize that general paralysis was a separate disease entity and not simply a complication of mental illness. ? [Norman]. Garrison & Morton 4797; Norman 389; Wellcome II, p. 288; Zilboorg & Henry p. 529. First Edition.

6 DEHUE, Trudy. Changing the Rules; Psychology in the Netherlands, 1900-1985.
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, (1995). 0521475228 / 9780521475228
8vo. ix, 204 pp. Illus., appendix, notes, index. Black silver and navy-stamped cloth. Fine. ISBN: 0521475228 The history of the social sciences has been marked by frequent and fierce debates on the rules of scientific methodology. Even the most general criteria agreed upon in the natural sciences are emphatically disputed in the social sciences. Presenting the history of psychology in the Netherlands as a case representative of Western social science, this book examines the divisive nature of social methodology more closely. The author scrutinizes published books and articles, as well as archival material and taped interviews, to sketch a history in which psychologists call their colleagues semi-intellectuals who take lack of clarity for profundity or accuse them of undermining respect for men. As to the question of how such disagreements on the rules of sciences should be understood, this book contradicts the common picture in which social scientists only gradually came to understand how their profession should be scientifically practiced. Students and scholars of the history of science and the history of psychology will be fascinated by this account. Publisher. ...tells a story about psychology in The Netherlands that is as fascinating for the color with which it paints individuals as it is thoughtful about the use of sociological concepts to explain change in science. The book has analytic as well as narrative purposes and is a model for the integration of description and analysis....Trudy Dehue has added a new dimension to the history of 20th-century psychology. She has carefully shown how the social construction of scientific methodologies actually occurs, and she has written with humor, penetration, and sensitivity about her world, a world in which we are all reflected. This is a book for anyone interested in psychology as a social activity. Roger Smith, Contemporary Psychology.
